RECOMMENDATION FOR WINTER


Recommendations of Georgian Water and Power Ltd. for Winter Season

 

Dear customers,

 

From November 1, current year, Georgian Water and Power Ltd. is getting ready for winter season. We are doing it every year though we do not know preliminarily how strict the winter is going to be. All these preparations are necessary to avoid possible problems accompanying frost and temperature fluctuation which can have adverse impact on Tbilisi water supply. That is why we are carrying out all necessary technical works – we are repairing water supply networks, winterize locking valves installed in main wells, pipes going through large facilities, various communications, etc. Besides, we are registering the streets of our capital with old and depreciated pipes as they can be exposed to emergency damages as a result of severe frost (more than -5 or 60) or sharp temperature fluctuation. These streets will be under strict control of the Company.

 

Together with upcoming winter it will be better if a certain part of our population meets it prepared. With this reason Georgian Water and Power has sent a recommendation letter to each Tbilisi customer, i. e. family, residing or doing their business in a private house, Tbilisi type yards (so called “Italian yards”) and block of flats with few families or 1-3 storey buildings or in the building, located in high point of Tbilisi. Water pipeline and metering points are basically installed in yards and on balconies of such houses, which increases the risk of failure of water pipelines and metering points located within the “red lines”, i. e. on the customers’ territories, as a result of freezing. It should be taken into consideration that such problems can cause delays in water supply of not only a concrete house or family, it can involve also neighbouring houses. Prompt response on such situations is not always possible, especially in the case, if the damage is on the private territory with no owners residing there. Besides, according to the GNERC rules, maintenance of any pipeline within the “red lines” or internal system is the customer’s responsibility.

 

 

We think it would not be bad if you could consider the following preventive measures:

 

  • Winterize water pipes and branches located in your yard, installed above the ground or on your balcony; 
  • Winterize a meter and locking valve installed in your yard or balcony;  
  • Protect as much as possible your utility cores (bathroom, toilet, taps, etc.) from frost if your think that they may freeze in the conditions of low temperature;
  • Winterize standpipes in entrances with flats, do not leave entrance windows in opened position (glaze them or cover window openings with plywood).

 

Pipes can be packed in special sponge with foil. A meter installed in a box can be winterized with the same sponge and foil or “foam plastic” balls in thick polyethylene pack put around the water meter.

  

If you are planning to leave Tbilisi for a certain period in winter, in order to avoid damaging and freezing of your metering point, please, take into consideration the following procedures:

 

  • Close the locking valve installed at the meter;  
  • Empty the whole water system in the house (from reservoir to meter).

 

At the same time, Georgian Water and Power requests you to regularly check weather prognosis in media on regular basis

If extremely low temperature is expected in Tbilisi during several days and, if you had the same problem last winter, then it will better if you leave the tap running all night long.
  
A match size flow is absolutely enough for this.  

 

If you meet winter with winterized water pipeline and meter you will be able to avoid certain problems and delays in water supply which can be caused by freezing of water in pipes, failure of meter and local damage on your network.
